Cold Jac

When the icy winds blow, poor Jac is so cold that his teeth start to chatter but his grandmother has a simple answer to his problem. She will knit him a warm, woolly jumper. But she hasn't knitted for quite a while and the jumpers don't quite come out the right shape and size. Soon everyone on Jac's farm will be as cosy as can be.

This story has a long history. The rhyme was quite easy to do and Jac started out as Jack (with a k). It was sent to a few publishers who rejected it and then sat in my file of reject stories for a few years until the Welsh Books Council asked me to contribute a story for their World Book Day website. I dusted Cold Jack off, changed Jack to Jac (Welsh spelling) and did a few sample illustrations. This then prompted me to send it to a Welsh publisher so I sent it to Gomer with a few further alterations. Gran became Nain (the North Welsh word for grandmother) for instance. The pictures were based around a farm close to us owned by Gwen and Bleddyn Lewis (no relation) and I spent a very cold wet and windy day taking the photos!

It went on to be chosen as one of the 100 best children's books in the Book Trust guide and also won the 2003 Tir Na N-og Welsh Book Award.

It was also released simultaneously with a Welsh version translated by Elin Meek, also in rhyme which is no easy feat!

Reviews

Colourfully illustrated...with some humorous pictures and cheeky rhyme this book will also have parents chuckling over the simple reality of such a persistant grandmother and a child with so much initiative. THE BIG ISSUE

This book is ideal for KS1 children (under sevens) who will enjoy its gentle humour and humanity. With considerable success, Rob Lewis is his own illustrator, bringing an extra charm to the witty and affectionate verse of the story. The rhythms are ideal for helping children anticipate by rhyme, and are never intrusive or gawky. I believe this is a tome that should take its place in every infant library in Wales. Its bright illustrations alone will stimulate curiosity, laughter and pleasure, and its entertaining text will set small minds humming. CAMBRENSIS
